Leadership and Governance
– Ted Mitchell became president of ACE on September 1, 2017
– Mitchell served as the U.S. Department of Education’s undersecretary of education from 2014 to January 2017
– Mitchell also served as president of Occidental College from 1999 to 2005
– The current board chair is Barbara R. Snyder, president of Case Western Reserve University

Programs and Activities
– ACE coordinates programs and activities in areas such as policy and advocacy, leadership, attainment and innovation, internationalization, and research

History and Establishment
– Representatives from 14 higher education associations formed the Emergency Council on Education in 1918
– The name was changed to the American Council on Education and Donald J. Cowling became the first president
– ACE played a role in developing a standardized evaluation and accreditation system for institutions of higher learning
– ACE published the first official listing of accredited higher education institutions in 1920
– ACE established the Committee on the Training of Women for Professional Service in 1920

Advocacy and Policy Development
– ACE supported the creation of Senator J. William Fulbright’s scholarship program to promote mutual understanding of U.S. democracy.
– ACE played a role in establishing the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to provide international exchange opportunities.
– ACE, along with other organizations, formed the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to streamline educational assessment processes.
– ACE conducted a survey on college admission practices, revealing widespread discrimination against black, Jewish, and Catholic students.
– ACE assisted in crafting the language and policy for the Higher Education Act of 1965, expanding federal aid to all qualified students.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Student Success
– ACE convened the Conference on Women in the Defense Decade and established the Commission on the Education of Women (CEW) to research women’s higher education.
– ACE helped define higher education’s response to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, prohibiting discrimination against individuals with disabilities.
– ACE created the National Center for Academic Achievement and Transfer (NCAAT) to identify factors affecting student transfers to four-year institutions.
– ACE launched the American College Application Campaign to assist low-income high school seniors in completing and submitting college applications.

The American Council on Education (ACE) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) U.S. higher education association established in 1918. ACE's members are the leaders of approximately 1,700 accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities and higher education-related associations, organizations, and corporations. The organization, located in Washington, D.C., conducts public policy advocacy, research, and other initiatives related to key higher education issues and offers leadership development programs to its members and others in the higher education community.
